2017-09-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thank you for doing this chat Nick. I have to cut one of these three guys (Daniel Norris, Matt Harvey or Matt Strahm) to make my roster legal going into the off season. Who you cutting in preparation for next year? Your thoughts on the two guys you keep for the next year? Thank you!
(MatternK from Point Mugu, CA)
Thanks for your question, MatternK!

It's depressing, but I think I'm cutting Matt Harvey. At this point, I feel like we have to assume that thoracic outlet syndrome surgery is absolutely devastating, and Harvey's pitching since he developed TOS symptoms / post-surgery supports that position.

I've always been a Norris believer and think he could still figure things out, even if it is out of the bullpen. Strahm I don't know quite as well, and the knee injury isn't encouraging but...well, he has a chance to be good and I'm not sure Harvey does anymore. (Nick Schaefer)
2017-07-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you had to give up on two of these SP in a dynasty league full keeper who would it be, Vargas, Musgrove, Clevinger, Daniel Norris, Luke Weaver, Patrick Corbin or Blake Snell?
(MatternK from Point Mugu)
When you say "give up on" do you mean trade or release? Vargas and Clevinger both appear to be pitching above their talent level and peripherals, so if you can trade them they seem like good picks. If it's straight up "abandon in a roster crunch" I think I'd drop Corbin and then one of either Musgrove or Clevinger. (Nick Schaefer)
2017-05-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Daniel Norris: this this hittable #4 starter with bad command all her is, or is there some untapped upside I'm missing?
(thegreg7 from Cleveland)
Hey, I was just talking Pirates, a No. 4 with a 4.55 ERA sounds pretty good...

Actually, a No. 4 with a 4.55 ERA is attractive to a lot of clubs, particularly when that 4.55 ERA comes with a 3.62 FIP and 3.98 DRA (88 DRA-), indicating that he's pitched better than his ERA indicates. And he just turned only 24.

So there's hope. The K/BB has never been his long suit--hell, he walks too many guys and strikes out too few, it's not just the ratio--but he's OK as a No. 4. I think Tigers fans may be expecting more, and that may be pushing it. A starter with a 4.00 ERA has value, though. (Rob Mains)
2017-01-31 19:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for evening hours I work days so its nice to see you on at night quick question how world you rank these four pitcher if you were in a dynasty league. which two would you keep. Kevin Gausman, Blake Snell, Kenta Maeda, Daniel Norris,
(OB1 from Tampa)
In that order, actually. Although I have Gausman, Snell, and Maeda all clustered together in the mid to late 40s. I'd go Gausman and Snell, with their youth as the tie-breaker. (Mark Barry)
2016-03-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat, Michael. What are the breakout (or breakdown!!) chances for pitchers such as Martin Perez, Kevin Gausman, Daniel Norris, James Paxton, Michael Pineda, Joe Kelly, Kyle Gibson, etc. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
(DJ from Dallas )
Already talked about Gausman. I think Paxton might get squeezed out of a surprisingly deep Mariners rotation. Pineda's already good, Gibson kind of is what he is at this point, as is Kelly, who in a just world would've moved to the bullpen full-time two years ago.
That leaves Perez, whom I've always been down on compared to what appears to be the consensus, and Norris, whom I like to bounce back if only because he's got an open rotation spot in Detroit, to say nothing of it being unlikely that he receives a surprise cancer diagnosis this year. (Michael Baumann)
2016-01-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Blake Snell reminds me of the hype around Daniel Norris last year. How would you compare the two?
(Jim from Lakeland)
Interesting comparison based on hype alone, and I can understand it. Lefties who arrived quickly and with authority, with full arsenals but questions on command. I have Snell with a slightly higher ceiling, overall but am a big fan of both profiles. (Top 101 Chat with Craig Goldstein)
2015-10-19 19:00:00 (link to chat)How much concern should we have for Daniel Norris and this cancer news? Does he still have SP2 upside?
(Iris from Outside Detroit. )
I'd be concerned because it's malignant but it's really hard to say what his recovery path will look like. He has the upside in terms of his stuff but we obviously have to see what his treatment entails with this late breaking news. (Tout Wars Champ Mike Gianella)
2015-11-05 12:00:00 (link to chat)I feel like Daniel Norris really didn't help Andrew Cashner with pitch framing this year. Is that on point?
(Mike from SoCal)
Derek Norris is actually a good framer according to our data, we have him saving over 12 runs with presentation this past season. Now, I'm not an expert in presentation (ask Harry Pavlidis!) but it's possible that Norris did better with a Kennedy or someone else, and less well with Cashner. I'm not sure about how framing varies by pitcher type, but it's conceivable that a guy who works around the zone and has less loud stuff might be easier for the catcher than someone like Cashner. (Jeff Long)
2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Mau, Who would you rather have long-term, Gausman or Daniel Norris?
(Cal Guy from Cal)
I'm leaning Norris here because I'm currently looking at the list of Baltimore Orioles pitching prospects and it's not pretty. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-09-21 20:30:00 (link to chat)I'm rebuilding in dynasty and have Longo. Nobody seems to want him (or at least they didn't at the trade deadline...I got offers like Daniel Norris for Longo straight up). What do I do with him?
(Sam from CT)
Wait for the right opportunity and enjoy above-average performance until then. Third base is a mess these days. (Bret Sayre)
2015-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)How would you draft these guys and who are the real Aces in the group if any? Kevin Gausman Eduardo Rodriguez Aaron Sanchez, Daniel Norris, Kyle Gibson,
None of these guys are aces in my opinion, but I'd go Norris, Rodriguez, Gausman, Sanchez, Gibson. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-07-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is the better pitcher in Dynasty league, Alex Reyes, Daniel Norris, or Steven Matz?
(Silverback38 from VA)
Matz is the most polished and getting his chance now. Norris has shown he can hang in there in the bigs already. Reyes is still raw as anything, but man that FB/CB combo is one to dream on. I'd go Matz/Reyes/Norris I think, but if you're so inclined to value safety first then Norris leaps comfortably ahead of Reyes. Reyes is your boy for ceiling, though: (Wilson Karaman)
2015-07-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Daniel Norris? Really liked him coming into this season but seems to be struggling even after his demotion.
(Grizz from Chi)
I like Norris a lot too, and I don't think some initial big league struggles are enough to derail that enthusiasm. He wasn't TERRIBLE by any means, but it does seem as though the control has some more road to travel. We're still discussing him as a top 10 guy in our #BPTop50 debates, so I think the general consensus remains unchanged on him as a high-end prospect. (Wilson Karaman)
2015-03-25 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you rank higher amongst these near MLB ready arms: Jameson Taillon, Archie Bradley, Daniel Norris, or Chi Chi?
(Silverback38 from VA)
Norris, Bradley, Chi-Chi are all very close for me-- probably within 8-10 spots total. Taillon lags behind those three in my view. (Jordan Gorosh)
2015-03-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Daniel Norris looked pretty good last night in his spring debut against the Orioles. If he wins the fifth starter job out of camp can you see him winning the rookie of the year? What kind of numbers would you project him for? 10+ wins with a sub 4 era, and an 8+/K9 realistic?
(JamesCybulski from Toronto)
Absolutely think he'd be a candidate for ROY. He's going to miss bats, and though the command isn't quite there yet, it's good enough to keep the ERA quality. He's one of the 20 best prospects in baseball and he's pretty close to being ready. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-01-21 15:00:00 (link to chat)What are you thoughts on future roles for Daniel Norris and Aaron Sanchez in Toronto? Two really good starters, or back-of-the-rotatio/bullpen types?
(Frank from Toronto)
I really like Sanchez in the bullpen, and hopefully he continues to lengthen his stride a bit with a touch more momentum. I think that Norris has a future in the rotation, though he needs to hone his delivery during the rotational phases and work on his timing to find consistency. I think that Norris has a limited ceiling, though. (Doug Thorburn)
2014-12-11 18:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mark, thanks for the chat! Now that JA Happ has been traded, who do you think has a better chance of success in the 5th starter role for the Jays this season, Aaron Sanchez or Daniel Norris? Who in the long term?
(Steve from Toronto)
I like Sanchez as the superior prospect, but I think Norris has a better chance for success in the rotation in 2015. Sanchez's game still needs to make some strides, most notably with his control/command and overall consistency, something that will lead to a lot of short outings and overall scatter shot performance, while I think Norris can at least grind out 5-6 innings on a consistent basis, even if he's not completely ready for big league turns every five days. (Mark Anderson)
2014-09-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Looking at BP 101 SP available in my 16-team dynasty: Folty (RP?), Almonte, Stewart, Harvey, E. Rodriguez, Barnes, Chi Chi, Berrios, Tirado, Kingham, Enny Romero, Pierce Johnson, Thorpe. Daniel Norris is also available. I've focused on MLB this year; any of these guys (or guys not on the 101) decent risers this year? Struggling to merge them onto my draft board with the MLB SP like deGrom, Carrasco, Shoemaker, Roark, Keuchel, McHugh, Anderson, Fiers, etc. available. Any names jump out from this motley crew, MILB or MLB, as draft targets? If it matters, I finished 3rd and pick 14 of 16 so prefer near ETAs. Here's hoping #TINO shows no #slack this fall/winter. Thanks.
(JoJo from SD)
Take the MLBers. The order you have is good, too. TINO will be around all winter, but on an abbreviated schedule (twice a month) (Craig Goldstein)
2014-09-15 19:30:00 (link to chat)Which minor league players are most likely to start in the American League in 2015 that are either flying under the radar or have not been brought up. Thanks!
(Cinco bros from AZ)
For players who haven't come up yet, how about Rusney Castillo, Francisco Lindor, Chi Chi Gonzalez, Miguel Sano and Kyle Zimmer. For guys who are just under the radar, let's go with Nick Franklin, Mike Foltynewicz, Dylan Bundy, Drew Pomeranz, Daniel Norris and Oswaldo Arcia. (Ben Carsley)
2014-09-10 12:00:00 (link to chat)I'm 26 and the girl I thought I was going to marry broke up with me last night. Tell me something about the Blue Jays to make me feel better.
(Kyle from Canada)
Marcus Stroman is one of the best 25U pitchers in baseball. I think he has proven to just about everyone that he is a legitimate starter. Those guys Aaron Sanchez and Daniel Norris are pretty good too. (Tucker Blair)
2014-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mazara, Josh Harrison and Carlos Carrasco for my Daniel Norris, how do you feel about that trade in a dynasty league?
(Donald from Denver)
Seems like a good deal for you, particularly if Carrasco is legit (see my earlier answer for Carrasco). (Mike Gianella)
2014-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Daniel Norris is making me feel things in my private areas. Where does his OFP currently stand with you?
(jbirenbaum from Toronto)
55/60 -- he's legit. Not going to be a TOR talent but he's got the makings of solid starter.
Also, you should see a doctor about that other thing. (Harry Pavlidis)
2014-08-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has Daniel Norris passed some of the other more notable pitching prospects, i.e. Crick, Owens, Stephenson and yes even Archie Bradley?
(Peter from Toronto)
Norris destroyed High-A, but that was expected. He struggled some at AA initially, but he's just fine. Mellen has a great report on him here:

Crick is a reliever. Every scout and industry guy I have ever talked to has said that.

Crick (Tucker Blair)
2014-07-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)I saw Daniel Norris pitch at the Futures Game. This was the first time I've seen him other than some old video from 2012. I noticed he has reduced his trunk tilt and lost his closed stride. With changes to JA Happ and attempted changes to Ricky Romero, do you see this a philosophy shift in the Jays development process?
(Chris Sherwin from Windsor, Ontario)
Can always count on Chris for a thought-provoking Jays question. Balance and posture are traits that many young players improve over time as their round into their physical peak, so it's tough to credit an organizational shift from one player's adjustments. The previous emphasis on short strides with certain pitchers (ie Sanchez) was an overall negative, IMO, so any movement away from the philosophy would be a good thing. (Doug Thorburn)

2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)Would you be in favor of putting Aaron Sanchez and Daniel Norris in the Toronto pen after the break? That's being considered according to a tweet from Jim Bowden.
(Kyle from Ontario, Canada)
Sanchez makes more sense than Norris. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)While not on the list, how does Daniel Norris compare to the other popularly discussed starters these days?
(Silverback38 from VA)
Daniel Norris was on the list (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Aaron Sanchez's control issues and possible move to the bullpen, is it safe to say Daniel Norris and Sean Nolin are the best in house starter prospects? When do you project they get their chances, eh?
(Hoser from Bob n Doug's Kitchen)
I'm not prepared to say Sanchez is destined for the bulllpen in any way. Even as much as I question the projection of his control/command, I still think he can succeed in the Major Leagues as a starter. He may end up more of a #3 than a #2 that his raw stuff suggests he should become, but that's still a damn valuable rotation piece. I still consider Sanchez the best starting pitching prospects in the Blue Jays organization and the gap between Sanchez and Norris/Nolin is considerable for me. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospect has surprised you the most this season and made you a believer in his skill set?

Daniel Norris has impressed me, but I'm not quite there yet. There are serious believers among the BP Prospect Team, but I have not traditionally been one of them. I'm getting there but still not on the bandwagon. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who has a higher ceiling, Daniel Norris or Aaron Sanchez? Who do you think will be the better player in the end?
(Daniel from Chicago)
I still think Aaron Sanchez has the bigger ceiling. Norris is fun from what I've read, however. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)12-team dynasty, 6x6 (with BB for batters, K/BB for P) 7 player MiLB rosters: I have a couple fringier MiLB players right now (Winker, Berrios) and wondering if any of these avail. guys would be better adds: Hunter Dozier, Raimel Tapia (still don't quite get the hype but I'm not a scout), Michael Taylor, Daniel Norris, Josh Bell. Thanks!
(NorDub from PNW)
Definitely Tapia, Daniel Norris is worth a look. Winker and Berrios are good though, I'd probably wait and assess after next monday when the BP top 50 comes out. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Would you rather have Daniel Norris or Aaron Sanchez? Also, do you think the Cubs could get both for Samardzija? (or just norris for hammel)
(splatstrike from Chicago)
Answered the first part a bit in another question, Sanchez. Trades are hard to evaluate, all I can say is that from the comfort of my keyboard without my job on the line I would give up both for Samardzija were I in the Jays position. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Rank these prospects in a dynasty: Rosell Herrera, Nick Williams, Blake Swihart, Daniel Norris, Trevor Story, Alen Hanson, Philip Ervin, Kennys Vargas, Steven Mats.
(Tim from NJ)
Nick Williams, Trevor Story, Daniel Norris and Blake Swihart are the big four of that group. I think everyone kinda rounds out the backend. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jeff - With the feature on the main page in mind, I was wondering if you or the staff had any thoughts on Daniel Norris' start last night? Second start in AA against a good line up and struck out 10 while "allowing" 1 run after he was out of the game.
(Donkey from Ottawa)
I don't think we had anyone in attendance to see Norris' game last night, but none of this is shocking. This is what Norris can do. He's very good, and arguing against him in today's feature was no small task. This was more of the same and I imagine he was only removed as early as he was because striking out that many batters runs up a pitch count. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Depdending on the other parts of the package, would you include Daniel Norris in a deal for Samardzija ?
(Clutchlings from Ontario)
Absolutely. I'd let them pick any three guys they wanted other than Stroman. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-06-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Medical issues aside, would you rank Luis Ortiz above or below Lucas Sims, Miguel Almonte, and Daniel Norris?
(Silverback38 from VA)
I had Daniel Norris ranked higher than the other two Rule 4 eligible arms -- his issue as a HSer was finding consistency in his mechanics and executing his stuff. The raw grades were always borderline elite. I wasn't on Almonte as an international amateur, so it's tough for me to include him in the comparison. (Draft Day Chat with Nick J. Faleris)
2014-05-27 11:30:00 (link to chat)Have you gotten any reports on Alberto Tirado? He seems to be struggling, but after seeing Daniel Norris do the same last year, I'm thinking its just standard growing pains.
(bluejaysplus from Canada)
Not throwing a lot of strikes, let alone quality strikes. FB command is a problem, and the velocity is down a bit. I'm not all that worried, because he's young, but he may be a two year MWL guy. If that's what's best for the development, I'm okay with that. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)In response to your desire of more questions, I will add a few to the list. First, Have Daniel Norris and Caleb Kowart changed people's mind of them? Everyone seemed to have soured on them due to last years subpar performance. Both have started off well this year. Your thoughts on expectations as of now.
(Silverback38 from VA)
This is going to be a "small sample size awareness" chat, I can already tell from the queued questions. Let's put it this way those who completely wrote Norris and Cowart off last year are just as foolish as those who put a ton of stock into their first two weeks. Norris' projection is as a mid-rotation starter, and Cowart's is as a starting third baseman. That hasn't changed yet, but if people gave up on these guys last year in shallower MiLB leagues, sure, go get 'em. (Ben Carsley)
2014-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any newfound higher expectations of Daniel Norris?
(Silverback38 from VA)
Not really; I still see him as more of a #4 starter. I'm admittedly on the lower end with him. (Mark Anderson)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)What type of reports were you hearing on Daniel Norris that drove you to rank him 4th in the Blue Jays system? Statistically (and mechanically) he had a rough 2012 and first couple of months of 2013 before seemingly turning it around big time in the second half. Is this the real Norris we're seeing?
(Kyle from Canada)
Yes. Its real. His delivery was definitely more fluid and repeatable in 2013, and the stuff is very good: 6 FB; 6 SL; 5+ potential CH. It's a nice profile. (Jason Parks)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Can you rank these guys please. Thanks! Marcus Stroman, Didi Gregorius, Jorge Alfaro, Austin Hedges, Daniel Norris, Lance McCullers, Bryce Brentz, Daniel Corcino, Clayton Blackburn, Delino DeShields.
(Brandon from Pittsburgh)
DeShields, Blackburn, McCullers, Alfaro, Brentz, Stroman, Hedges, Norris, Corcino, Gregorius. (Bret Sayre)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)How much has Daniel Norris' stock fallen over the past year? With the plus stuff still kicking around and the delivery issues, the similarities to Aaron Sanchez in some regards seem high.
(Steve from Winnipeg)
He's young. His stock is going to ebb and flow as he goes thru the developmental process. (Jason Parks)
2012-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm very new to following prospects in baseball. Are there any players I should be keeping my eye on this summer from the Vancouver Canadians?
(Stacy from Vancouver)
You'll probably see some of the 2010 draftees, especially Daniel Norris from the Top 101, but mostly it will be 2012 draftees that we don't know. (Kevin Goldstein)
